Givenchy Ange ou Démon

Givenchy Ange ou Démon, composed around the idea of a naughty and nice duality, hovers like a cloud of meringue without much of a venture into perdition. Still, a few unusual notes make Givenchy's new release a shade more interesting than your average creamy floriental on a base of soft woods.

This new scent by Olivier Cresp and Jean-Pierre Bethouart begins with a blast of fruit loop-esque mandarin, the essence of white thyme, and a subtle touch of saffron. The perfume's heart combines buttery white florals of lily, ylang-ylang, and orchid maxillaria, known as the "coconut orchid" for its distinctive coconut scent.

The usual creamy base of tonka bean and sweet vanilla share space with seldom smelled notes of palisander wood and Oak wood essence. The result is that a very familiar composition of white flowers, vanilla and woods takes on uncanny seasoning. Thyme lends the sun-baked quality of the provencal countryside, where the leaves actually grill to a crisp on the stem. Saffron gives the wearer a sumptuous sense of being swaddled in silk. The coconut orchid amps up the scent's sweetness and the rare palisander (cherry) wood and oak wood wake up what would otherwise be a somnolent confection with their tannic bite of leaves and the solidity of fine furniture.

With her dark roots beneath a loopy mane of gold, Ms. Weiss, spawn of Dominique Villepin, appears to wear the working wig of a girl who sulks as she strips to put herself through art school. There is something faintly ridiculous about the promotional image and the mascot's glum look. Sullen doesn't always sizzle. Yet, the juice is quite wearable and more interesting than many major releases.

Givenchy Ange ou Démon will be at Nordstrom in mid-August but they are already giving out little plastic packet samples. She's no Belle de Jour, but Givenchy Ange ou Démon is a valiantly novel release in the world of sweet spicy florientals.

It's out at our Nordies already... I was underwhelmed. I found your comments spot-on, particularly the ads. Where is the Demon? It was very ... meh.

"Sullen doesn't always sizzle." Well said. But you interested me in this one, I just ordered a sample. I cannot resists saffron. :-)

Dear March,
Yes, I was looking forward to something more wicked, but I did convince myself I liked some of its spices.

Dear Marina,
I think you might like it though from what I know you would want more oomph to your saffron and a dark underbelly. Though the model has dark roots, the perfume lacks a dark underbelly.

I can never resist palisander or saffron, so I'll have to try this, but I'm slightly concerned about a lack of "oomph" factor. I tend to like scents that truly do stroll over to the dark side. If that ad is supposed to imply some sort of duality w/ that slight shadow, they are shockingly off base as far as I'm concerned - someone at Givenchy needs to take a whiff of MKK or Yatagan to understand what the dark side of scent can truly be about. I know - they'd never get the angelic side of a scent w/ MKK, but I'd prefer the angelic side to be the one less emphasized.

Misnamed but a nice scent. Not FBW in my opinion unless you fall under the spell of the lovely bottle.

Hmmm...
Palisander, yes-saffron,yes-spices,yes; not even FAINTLY wicked?

Oh, dear....

Is it at least cozy?
Sometimes, I'm happy with cozy...

Hee hee, dark underbelly...sounds so cute :-)

Dear Elle,
I hear you, though angelic can be wonderful if done without kitsch. I don't always like the overkill on the "dark" notes.

Cait Shortell said...

Dear Victoria,
I was so ready to fall, but truth be known it didn't captivate me.

Cait Shortell said...

Dear Chaya,

It's a little too intensely sweet to be cozy. Worth a sniff, though.

Cait Shortell said...

Dear Marina,
Glad to give you a giggle.

I wonder if Mlle de Villepin was chosen for the ad campaign when her daddy was still a fresh and new prime minister? He's so unpopular now (though definitely the most dashing PM since Pierre Trudeau) that the idea of wearing a scent bearing his offspring's sullen likeness turns me off... BTW, I re-read your review of Sira des Indes and decided that, yes, perhaps just one fruity oriental... As soon as I have a moment to dress up like a humain being again (which I'm not when I'm writing/redecorating, like now), I'll hop on the metro, direction Patou!

Cait Shortell said...

Dear CC,
I think her career is just taking off, from what I have read.

On Sira des Indes, I think you'll at least have to enjoy the presentation of it at Patou. If you feel like an eternal come as you are experience, you can always consider moving to Alaska. Heheh.

Hi Cait!

Alright..... I was disappointed with this one. On me and to my nose this smelled like White Diamonds and I find that scent atrocious.

But....I see Sira Des Indes mentioned in your reply above and I have to say I am in love with this fragrance. Victoria recently sent me a sample she had and the rest is history. I ended up splurging for the bigger bottle. It's gorgeous.

Have a great day.

Perhaps the wee little burnt bit I found in it is the same as your grilled tannic leaves? Dunno. I did like it, but wish it were something "more" somehow.

And you're right, she does look rather glum. I think she looks rather lost in that top photo, but that's only because my dog cocks his head and wears the same expression when he gets turned around or confused... Ay. The bottle is certainly something to behold, though with the chandelier crystals above in the ad.

Cait Shortell said...

Yes, the bottle. It reminds me of my little brother's Gobots, though.

Cait, I have been back several times just to read that sentence. Wish you'd publish your novel... BTW do you supposed CDG Palisander has palisander in it? It's a wonderful, woody smell. I should send you some, if you haven't tried it.

Cait Shortell said...

Dear March,
Thank you! I wish I would publish my novel too. I would also love you to send me some Palisander. Isn't that by Yann Vasnier?

I love the fragrance. Probably one of the best from Givenchy. Very sensual, very feminine, very elegant. Smells a little like Bond 9 Chinatown fragrance.
